Introduction to Guarda - Almeida
Flying over Almeida, it's impossible not to be charmed by the star-shaped fortress that surrounds this charming medieval town. This national heritage site is set northeast of Guarda, Portugal's highest city, in the Beira Interior Norte just west of the Spanish border. Almeida sits along one of the earliest cross-border roads with Spain, and the twelve-pointed fortress was built around the town to guard it from Spanish forces. Even so, the city was besieged three times during its history, during the Seven Years' and Peninsular Wars. These sieges are well documented in the local museum, but the most thrilling experience is to see the summer reenactments of the battles organised by the town. Dramatic costumes and theatrics are not spared in this exhilarating show, a testament to the town's proud heritage. Tours of the fortress and the town's Manueline church, Portuguese bullfighting and cavalry shows will delight tourists staying in Almeida hotels. A number of important Napoleonic sites are only a short drive away, displaying battlefields and fortresses that remind visitors of the country's extensive military history.
