Stretching across Portugal’s northern frontier with Spain is one of its greatest national parks. Geres is a fascinating natural environment, with stony dolmens, pine forests, cultural villages and even megalithic tomb sites. The government tries hard to manage the influx of tourists to the park in order to preserve the integrity of its attractions and eco-system. A limited network of hiking trails leads visitors to the main sites such as the Pitoes das Junias Monastery and the ancient castros at Castro Laboreiro and Calcedonia. A number of waterfalls, among the most popular hiking attractions, can be found within the park. Also here is the Portela do Homem frontier trading post and its Roman milestones. The stone granaries capped with crosses at Soajo are another of the top attractions in Geres. The amenities are limited to the few cafes in the villages. Geres hotels can be found in Caldas do Geres or the villages of Lindoso and Soaja.
