Introduction to Faial - Horta - City Centre
Set on the coast of one of the Azores' greatest gems, Faial, the small city of Horta boasts black sand beaches, thick history and spectacular views of volcanoes, both on Faial itself as well as on nearby Pico. The city's complex history dates back to the 15th century and has been influenced by numerous European empires, notably those ruled by the Spanish, the Portuguese and the Dutch. Today it serves as a leisure destination, primarily for those arriving by yacht at the lovely marina, which boasts a unique collection of outdoor artwork, with a tradition of maritime arrivals contributing to the work. Set adjacent to the marina are a good number of Faial - Horta City Centre hotels to cater to arrivals. The town boasts a wide range of other attractions as well, including Castelo de Santa Cruz, a 16th century structure designed to provide protection from pirates; the castle features its own quaint chapel which is dedicated to St Anthony. Equally interesting is Porto Pim, the former harbour of the town, which boasts a lovely sheltered beach and remnants of a now defunct Portuguese whaling factory.
