The city of Estremoz is often referred to as Portugal's marble capital, as almost the entire city is made out of this stone resource, not to mention its primary exports over the past few centuries. It is found in the province of Alentejo and is certainly a destination not to be missed. Getting into the city is relatively easy, as trains and buses connect it with Lisbon and Porto. The Upper City is the older district, and home to some of the most fascinating marble attractions in the world. The Lower City also contains some magnificent attractions. Estremoz hotels are found across the city, but getting around is remarkably easy, so visitors shouldn't worry too much about the location of their accommodation. One of the most amazing sites in the city is the old castle that is perched on top of the Old Town hill. In addition to the castle, the hill offers a museum that displays religious crafts, art from the region and historical relics. The main square hosts a wonderful market every Sunday, which happens to be the largest in Portugal. Walking the marble stone streets is another must-do activity.
