Introduction to Coimbra - Santa Cruz
Coimbra is a town in a municipality of the same name in Portugal. The city was the Portuguese capital from 1139 to 1260, during the High Middle Ages, and is home to the University of Coimbra, which was established in 1290 and is one of the oldest in Europe. The town dates to the Roman era, when it was known as Aeminium, and features a nicely preserved aqueduct and cryptoporticus, or covered corridor. The chief attraction by far is the Monastery of Santa Cruz, which besides being honoured as a National Monument, is also Portugal's National Pantheon. Portugal's first two kings are interred here. The holy structure was founded in 1131 outside of the walls of the city, and was the main monastic house during the early days of the Portuguese monarchy. The monastery is dedicated to the Order of St Augustine and was given many royal grants and papal privileges. There are various Coimbra hotels for resting well at night.other spellings: santa cruzhotels, santa crus hotell, zanta cruz hote, santa kruz otel, santa curz hotle
