Introduction to Coimbra - Santa Clare
Guests come to Santa Clara, Portugal, to feel the spirituality emanating from the town's many holy structures. The Monastery of St Clara the New, a national monument, was erected in the 1600s and 1700s to replace the commonly flooded, nearby medieval Monastery of St Clara the Old, which is near the pretty but sometimes destructive Mondego River. The ruined Monastery of Santa Clara a Velha, also a national monument, was erected in the 14th century on the left bank of the river. The site is highlighted by fine examples of Gothic architecture. Another top spiritual site here is the Monastery of Santa Clara of Coimbra, which was founded in the early 1300s by Queen Elizabeth, the wife of King Dinis I. The exquisite Quinta das Lagrimas estate is more than worth visiting for its 30 acres of well-maintained gardens and palace that is now a luxury hotel. More modest Santa Clara hotels can be found here as well.
