Introduction to Chaves, Portugal
Chaves is a town in the north of Portugal situated just 10kms from the border with Spain. The town has a long and interesting history and was of great military importance housing a Roman garrison, a castle and two forts. However, it is the hot thermal springs of the town that attracts most visitors to the hotels in Chaves. These springs are known locally as Caldas and many of the smaller Chaves hotels rely on the recently modernised spa complex, known throughout the country, for their main source of visitors. The old streets of the medieval quarter are lined with tall, narrow houses dating back many years and the 14th century Chaves castle and 17th century Sao Francisco and Sao Neutel forts are popular tourist attractions. The town is quite small which makes it easy to get around on foot even if you stay in one of the hotels in Chaves that are away from the centre.
