Introduction to Carcavelos - Beach

Carcavelos is known for its long stretch of beach and fabulous surfing, with thousands of tourists visiting this popular beach resort annually. It is one of the trendiest beaches near Portugal's capital city of Lisbon and many locals enjoy spending their weekends here. This surfer's paradise can become busy in the summer months and many Carcavelos Beach hotels fill up at this time. This is no surprise, as the beach offers both holidaymakers and locals a cool and beautiful getaway from the hot bustling capital city, which can be found just 12kms away. Although the beach is the main draw here, there are plenty of other things to do such as playing a round of golf or visiting the weekly market, which takes place each Thursday and can be found between the railway station and the town centre. The massive Fort of Sao Juliao da Barra dominates the beach. It can only be admired from the exterior as it holds the summer quarters of the Ministry of Defense.
