Introduction to Caramulo, Portugal
Back in the 1930s the health retreat town of Caramulo was the place those suffering from breathing and lung disorders were sent to benefit from the clear mountain air. Today there are still several sanatoriums but many more hotels in Caramulo catering for visitors who enjoy outdoor pursuits. The Serra do Caramulo mountain ridge is made up of a mixture of slate and granite and if you climb to the highest point on the ridge, Caramulinho, you will be rewarded with unrivalled views as far away as Aveiro on the west coast. For the less energetic, a short taxi ride from the hotels in Caramulo will take you to Snowy Peak (Cabeo de Neve), a popular viewing area where you will get similar vistas. In the town and easily reached on foot from most Caramulo hotels is the local museum with an interesting mix of exhibits that includes antique cars and modern art.
