Introduction to Almada, Portugal
The town of Almada is located only a short distance from the capital of Portugal, across the River Tagus. It is one of the 18 parishes situated within the Lisbon Greater Metropolitan Area, and contains a total population of about 160,000 citizens. The A2 highway runs directly through the middle of the settlement, and a train line links it to the capital city just across the river. Almada hotels can be found along the riverbank, but also in the centre. Transportation in the town includes an efficient light rail system. There is a very large park located in the southern reaches of the town, known as Parque de Paz. Another park worth visiting is Parque Julio Jose Ferraz. Visitors should take some time out to experience the large monument to Jesus Christ, the Cristo Rei statue, and witness the last frigate to sail from Portuguese waters, the Don Fernando II.
