Introduction to Alcobaca, Portugal
Known for its magnificent Gothic monastery, the town of Alcobaca has been an important hub for kings and religion since the 1100s. The enormous Alcobaca Monastery is the main attraction here, still serving an essential role in Portuguese culture. Wander the ancient halls, cloisters and garden, and check out relics like the tomb of King Peter I in this impressive UNESCO World Heritage site. The town’s main square is just along the street from the monastery, offering a picturesque look at medieval Portuguese architecture and design. This is also where many of the restaurants and shops are located, along with some of the most charming historic Alcobaca hotels. Besides absorbing the majesty of the monastery, visitors use Alcobaca as a base for exploring other attractions in the area such as the soaring Monastery of Batalha and the charming little medieval town of Obidos. Traditional fishing villages like Nazare can be found just to the west, while the romantic, restored castle at Porto de Mos is a favourite among travellers to this area.
