Historic Centre: which comprises a number of buildings that have been reconstructed based on original designs. The area was nearly completely destroyed by Nazis in WWII. The rebuilding took approximately 5 years to complete, and the overall effect today is so appealing that it lures thousands of visitors to the marketplace to see the historical structures and to enjoy time at the pleasant restaurants and cafes.
Jazz in the Square: the old town square in the city centre hosts this well-attended annual event running from July to August. It ranks as one of the major cultural events in the city. Thousands of people descend on the old town square to take in the musical premieres and international collaborations undertaken especially for the festival. Top jazz musicians from Poland, Sweden, the US and Israel participate; and all events are free to the public.
Shopping: Warsaw is seeing more international chain stores opening up branches here, such as Marks & Spencer – along with tons of top-end boutiques. The city boasts four main shopping streets on which you’ll find plenty more local shopping options: Desa, a sizable shop located at Ul Marszalkowska 34, specialises in fine antiques, art and china; and the Cepelia store features souvenirs, including Polish lace, dolls, jewellery and leather goods.
The largest flea market in Europe is located adjacent to the Poniatowskiego bridge in the Praga district. This is a place where you can find everything from memorabilia of the Soviet period to fur coats.
