Museums & Galleries in Warsaw
Adam Mickiewicz Museum of Literature: is housed inside of two merchant homes, located along the Old Town square. The museum is named after the ‘Bard of Poland’ Adam Mickiewicz, and features collections of curios related to this notable figure of the 19th century.
In addition, there’s plenty more to see here, with unusual items from the worlds of Sienkiewicz, Slowacki and Tuwim, among others.
Rynek Starego Miasta 20. Open: 10:00 to 15:00, Mon, Tue and Fri; 11:00 to 18:00, Wed, Thu; 11:00 to 17:00, Sun and public holidays.
Concerts that feature his music are still held here; and there’s an amazing collection of Chopin memorabilia, including letters, manuscripts and portraits – as well as the grand piano on which Chopin composed many of his remarkable works.
Ul Okolnik 1. Open: 10:00 to 18:00, Tue to Sun; closed on Mon and holidays.
Historical Museum of Warsaw: provides visitors with an interesting look at the rise and fall of the country over the centuries. Of particular note is the incredible contrast between culturally and architecturally rich Warsaw pre-WWI and the starker reality of the city after that time.
Katyn Museum: Katyn is the name of a Russian forest, and the scene of the execution in 1940 of more than 25,000 Polish officers by Stalin’s troops. In the post-WWII period, it was forbidden to use the word ‘katyn’ in the Polish press, as the occupying Russians realised that the name symbolised the crimes against these soldiers.
The first of these victims were found by the Germans in 1943. The museum preserves the memory of the officers and the crime; and features exhibits of many of the personal effects that were discovered in the graves in Katyn forest.
Ul Powsinska 13. Open: 10:00 to 16:00, Wed to Sun; closed Mon and Tue.
National Museum: is the most comprehensive of all the city’s museums in terms of its collections. The range is from the art of ancient Egypt, Rome and Greece to the decorative arts and furniture of the European Renaissance period.
The museum's collections of paintings include works of the lesser known Polish masters of the 19th century; and also of the works of Witkacy – a 20th century Polish artist who has been gaining international attention.
Al Jerzolimskie 3. Open: 10:00 to 16:00, Tue, Wed, Fri, Sat and Sun; 10:00 to 18:00, Thu.
