Warsaw Travel Guide

Introduction

Overview & Introduction to Warsaw
Although the city was almost completely destroyed by the Nazis in the latter years of WWII, most of its monuments and historical buildings have been painstakingly recreated, and are complemented by some fine examples of modern architecture, adding even more character.
The city was built along both sides of the Wisla river: most of the main sights of interest are located on the river’s west bank, while the right bank is home to most of the business and residential sectors. The city centre and the old town are the most popular places for tourists to stay, and are both on the river’s west bank. To the north of old town is a district known as new town, also becoming a popular choice for tourist accommodation.
Accommodation in the city varies widely in terms of quality, facilities and price. Depending on your requirements, you can find cheap hostels and also luxury five-star deluxe hotels. The popular mid- to high-end chains such as Holiday Inn, Marriott, Meridien, Radisson, Sheraton and Sofitel are all represented here – and are centrally located as well.
Most times of the year, except the coldest of the winter months, hotels and guest lodgings in the city tend to fill up quickly and it’s important to book well in advance if you’re planning on staying in or around the central area.
