Introduction to Oswiecim, Poland
The Polish town of Oswiecim is most famously the heart of the former Auschwitz complex of Nazi concentration camps. Auschwitz I was located here and an expansion camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau, a forced-labour and extermination camp that supplied workers to the IG Farben chemicals factory, was located about eight kilometres to the east. Huge numbers of tourists visit the town and stay at hotels in Oswiecim. The large camp complex at the southern end of the town, which features the iconic, much photographed and once stolen prison gates bearing the words 'Arbeit Macht Free' (Work Sets You Free), is located at the southern end of the town. Other remnants of the horrors of WWII can be seen throughout the area, including around the vast chemical plant to the east. Jewish residents once formed a majority of the town's free population. This is perhaps best illustrated by the old Cemetery of Moses Religion, which is home to graves dating back to the 18th century. Oswiecim is not just about doom and horror, however. Many pretty buildings and streets, including the Market Square, can be enjoyed. The town's Jewish centre illustrates 150 years of local Jewish life. The town's 14th century Gothic castle sits on a hill overlooking the Sola River.other spellings: oswiecinhotels, otelin oswiecmi, oswieicm hotell, oswiceim hote, osweicim hotes
