Introduction to Krakow - Zwierzyniec
Southeastern Poland's Zwierzyniec town is scenically set right on the Wieprz River in Zamosc County. Only just over 3,000 people call this town home. The resplendent Roztocze National Park, which holds some of the best remaining areas of primordial forest in Central Europe, lies to the south. A local attraction is a manmade lake that is dotted with small islands, one of which has monuments commemorating the hounds of the Polish Queen Marysienka Sobieska. Another island features a lovely Baroque chapel, which eventually became the centre for the area's Catholic community. The town's history dates to the 1500s, when it was founded by the Zamoyski family. In WWII, the Nazis established a transit camp here; many victims who were imprisoned here were sent to the death camps.
