Introduction to Krakow - Podgorze
Podgorze is a district of Krakow, in Poland. Originally a fishing village, it is found on the southern bank of the Vistula River. Podgorze means at the bottom of a hill as it indeed is at the foot of Lasota Hill. It was allowed to become a city by Austrian Emperor Joseph II in 1784. A real attraction here is Krakus Mound (Kopiec Krakusa) on Lasota Hill, which is thought to be the place where the legendary Prince Krakus is interred. Once an area for residential homes and light industry, the district is now incorporated into the bustling city of Krakow. A sobering place for visitation is the historic site of the local Nazi ghetto and a factory of Oscar Schindler, a German who saved the lives of almost 1,200 Jews. A concentration camp was located here. It is part of Krakow's Old Town (Stare Miasto). Comfortable Podgorze hotels dot the district. Visit our Krakow Travel Guide
