Introduction to Krakow - Piasek
Piasek, in south-central Poland, is a part of the city of Krakow in the Centrum district northwest of the Old Town. Many mills are thought to have been here throughout the Middle Ages on the Royal Mills Creek (Mlynowka Krolewska). The town features Voivod's Library, the Agricultural University, a monastery, several houses from the 1800s - particularly on Karmelicka Street - and three theatres, namely Krupnicza, Karmelicka and Czysta. Several churches are worth a visit as well, including: the Gothic-style Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary and the monastery of Calced Carmelites, founded in 1397 by Ladislaus Jagiello, damaged during the Swedish deluge in 1655 and rebuilt two years later; and the 19th-century Church of the Lord's Resurrection, which has an excellent altar. The Piasek area has a population of almost 3,000 and is also known for the furnishings from the workshop of Jerzy Hankisz, made around the turn of the 18th century. Piasek hotels are within easy reach of the stated attractions including the Old Town.Visit our Krakow Travel Guide
