Introduction to Jelenia Gora, Poland
Jelenia Gora is a beautifully-preserved old city located in Lower Silesia, in the southwest of Poland.

The city offers visitors a superb mix of culture, history, sights and activities.

Sitting near the Krkonose mountain range, along the border with the Czech Republic, the city enjoys great access to alpine ski resorts.

The slopes at Szklarska Poreba and Karpacz are only about 30 minutes away from hotels in Jelenia Gora.

In warmer months, huge swatches of national park land in this area support hiking, fishing and other outdoor activities.

With a history stretching back to its founding in 1108, and having been left relatively unscathed by wars in the last century, the city has some beautiful old architecture.

Visitors will want to invest at least one afternoon to explore the Market Square, which is lined by colourful old buildings.

St Cross Church, a few minutes' walk to the west of the railway station, mixes an ornate Baroque exterior with a wonderfully flamboyant interior.

The big theatre, named after famed dramatist and author of a vade mecum, Cyprian Kamil Norwid, dates from 1903 but boasts classical 19th-century styling.
