Introduction to Jaworzno, Poland
Located in Poland's Silesian Highlands, in the south of the country, the city of Jaworzno is part of the greater metropolis of the city of Katowice, one of Europe's largest urban areas. Despite the region's large population (three million in Katowice and almost five million in the Silesian metropolis), the city is characterised largely by greenery and is home to many protected wilderness areas. Hotels in Jaworzno are well-located for visits to Dolina Zabnika nature reserve, which is about 20 minutes to the east. Dobra Wilkoszyn reserve is even closer and only takes about five minutes to reach. The nearby Sosina artificial lake is a popular destination for water sports and hosts the country's annual waterskiing championship. The city centre features a futuristic modern sports and cultural centre near a similarly futuristic church. WWII played a major role in the city's history, and various memorials to war dead and the survivors of the Holocaust can be found here. Perhaps the most striking is the monument next to the library. The site of the former Auschwitz concentration camp and its modern museum are about 25kms to the south. During WWII, a major sub-branch of this concentration camp operated in Jaworzno.
