Krakow - enjoy the local life and art in the Main Market Square
Krakow is a beautiful city with architecture from all eras of history and many of them can be seen around the main Market Square or Rynek Glowny as the locals call it. The square is 10 acres in size and filled with every type of shop imaginable. Wander around the square taking in the atmosphere and sampling the local delicacies in the restaurants. For something very different take one of the horse and buggy rides around the square and local side streets.Warsaw - climb the old town street car at Castle Square
A great way to learn about the city of Warsaw in a short period of time is on the historic street car that goes through Old Town Warsaw. The trip starts from Castle Square looping through the city back to the square where it finishes. The whole journey lasts about 30 minutes with a guide pointing out historic buildings and places of interest allowing you to go back to them later. The tram operates every day between 09.00 and 17.00 with foreign language guides available on request.Warsaw - visit the moving Gestapo Headquarters museum
The name Gestapo invokes all kinds of images, many of them bad, and the Gestapo Museum in Warsaw has a vivid display of life under German occupation in the city during WWII. There are reconstructions of the cells that prisoners were kept in along with the instruments used to torture them to extract information. This is a must visit for people with an interest in the history of Poland and WWII although it is not recommended for children under the age of 14.Wroclaw - experince the Botanic Gardens
Take some time out to relax and enjoy the beautiful flowers and plants in the Botanical Gardens in Wroclaw. Many of the species here are either rare or endangered making the role of the garden that more important. The gardens were originally started as a testing ground for the University of Wroclaw and opened to the public in 1811. The gardens are also a popular place for locals wanting to enjoy a romantic stroll in the evening.Introduction to Poland
Poland is one of the largest countries in Central Europe, meaning that its varied landscapes and historical cities are well-known among well-travelled Europeans. The medieval city of Krakow is now one of Europe's top locations for a city break. Most visitors stick to sightseeing in the old town and visiting Wawel Castle, but daytrips to Auschwitz, the notorious German concentration camp at 65kms away, are also possible. Krakow also hosts the biggest market square in the whole of Europe. Many of the historical centres in the north were destroyed during WWII but rebuilt cities, such as the capital, Warsaw, have incorporated a classical design. Staying in the north, Pomerania is home to Baltic beach resorts featuring some of the most spectacular sand dunes in the world. Many locals decamp to the beaches during the summer months, a time when resorts can get crowded. Poland hotels are not the bargain they once were, with prices now comparable to much of Europe.
