Introduction to Gdynia, Poland
The modern city of Gdynia offers relatively few historic attractions compared to other Polish cities. Just 100 years ago, it was a little village, with much of its expansion having taken place in the years since WWI. As a result, this is a great destination for fans of Modernist architecture, for which the city is famous. Swietojanska Street is probably the best place to enjoy such buildings. The city's location on the sea gives it an added dimension. Sopot Pier is Europe's longest wooden pier. Visitors arriving on the many cruise liners that call at the port cannot miss the Dar Pomorza, a three-mast tall ship. The city's aquarium nearby and is another excellent attraction. The city's oldest church, St Michael the Archangel, dates from the 13th century and is located in the northern district of Oksywie, once the location of a prehistoric culture of the same name. This is a fantastic city for walks, and from hotels in Gdynia, visitors can enjoy most of the attractions on foot. These include the seaside promenade from the marina to the city centre. Nature lovers will enjoy the verdant hills surrounding the city as well as the cliffs at Kepa Redlowska.
