Introduction to Gdansk, Poland
The city of Gdansk gained prominence as the birthplace of the political movement Solidarity who helped to bring about the end of the communist rule in Poland. The city is a major seaport and is situated on the Baltic coast close to the spa town of Sopot. There are several good hotels in Gdansk to stay at with popular tourist accommodation close to the rail station and the old town centre. It is in the old town where the best of the city's attractions are. These include many impressive buildings and several monuments. Getting around them is reasonably easy but you might want to ask English speaking staff in the Gdansk hotels for advice and signage tends to be in Polish. Sopot is a good place to visit for a day out from the hotels in Gdansk and there are regular ferries to take passengers there. Tickets must be bought in advance from an office close to the pier.
