Introduction to Czestochowa, Poland
Czestochowa sits in southern Poland, along the Warta River, where it has long been a site of immense importance to Roman Catholics. Huge numbers of pilgrims travel to the city to pay homage at the monastery, many of them doing the journey on foot during the summer. Jasna Gora, a Pauline monastery, is a large complex of incredible beauty, inside and out. An ornate tower rises high above the monastery, which is best approached along Aleja Henryka Sienkiewicza, which runs through the beautiful park. The location is known by staff at any of the hotels in Czestochowa. The monastery contains a rich collection of artworks, the most notable being a painting of the Black Madonna. The shrine of the Virgin Mary is among the many incredible pieces of religious architecture in the complex, and the interior of the basilica has to be seen to be believed. A map (available from the information centre), plenty of time and comfortable shoes are highly recommended. The city museum, located in the Old Town Hall, is worth a visit to learn of the city's colourful history.
