Palawan is rich in natural resources such as mineral deposits and is known to have the largest deposits of mercury in South East Asia. It is also rich in nickel, chromite, barite, manganese, feldspar, limestone, marble, gold, copper, iron, talc, quartz, and sulphur. A significant amount of oil and gas can also be found in the northern part of the province.
The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River: is one of the stunning bodies of water in Palawan. The underground river, which is surrounded by a limestone landscape, leads straight into the ocean and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Palawan is also home to a number of other bodies of water including four lakes, 52 rivers and countless small streams and beaches.
It is a sanctuary to many different forms of wildlife such as countless varieties of fish, manta rays and sea cows, which are known locally as dugong.
The Butterfly Garden: is another tourist highlight to be found in Palawan and is sure to catch the hearts of nature lovers. It is possible to witness the emergence of butterflies from their cocoons and the development of other insects such as the praying mantis, atlas beetles, giant scorpions, and stick insects. The Butterfly Garden is located at Santa Monica, Puerto Princesa.
The Tabon Caves: are the place to visit if you want to discover ancient Philippine Civilisation. These sites hold the remains of the 22,000 year old Tabon Man and many other relics which have been discovered by anthropological researchers.
The Palawan State Museum: displays historical and cultural information about Palawan including music, art, crafts, traditions and ancient people. It features various exhibits of archaeological and ethnological finds from digs in Cuyo Island.
