Manila has played a central role in the history of the Philippines. The city served as the primary seat of power during the Spanish colonial period as well as withstanding numerous occupations by the American and Japanese.

It served as a home to the early US military bases and witnessed several bloodied battles. Manila’s historical importance is however best celebrated in its many old buildings, museums, and Intramuros, the famous walled city at its centre.

Perhaps the city’s best-known attraction is the Manila Bay, said to be one of world’s finest natural harbours. Best known for its magnificent sunset views, the bay also serves entry ports to the neighbouring towns of Cavite and Bataan. The sidewalk bordering the bay has been converted into an open restaurant strip, popularly known today as the Baywalk.

Manila is an extremely tourist-friendly place, with many hotels and inns scattered throughout the city. The best time to visit is from November to March, just in time for the festive holiday season. The weather is also perfect at this time of the year, as the rains will just have ended and the air is pleasingly cool throughout the day.
