Travellers are advised to get vaccinated against typhoid before visiting the Philippines. There is a Malaria risk throughout the year but only in areas below 600m, with the exception of Cebu, Catanduanes, Bohol, and Manila. There is no risk in urban areas. A vaccination against rabies is also recommended.
Try to visit your physician at least four weeks before departure. Get vaccination against Meningococcus if you plan to visit Baguio City and the Cordillera Region. If you intend to stay for a month or longer in the country’s rural areas and engage in outdoor activities (particularly after sunset), you are advised to get vaccination against Japanese encephalitis.
Unless you are staying in good hotels, make it a point to boil or sterilise drinking water, even the water you use for brushing your teeth or making ice. Those with sensitive digestive systems are advised to avoid dairy products, which in the Philippines are likely be made using un-boiled milk.
