Introduction to Subic Bay - City Centre
The Subic Bay Freeport Zone is a successful example of a military base being converted into a duty-free commercial zone. The US gave Subic Bay to the Philippines in 1992 after a volcanic eruption destroyed much of the naval base. The government rebuilt the facility into a tax-free city akin to Singapore or Hong Kong, just much smaller. Today, the city centre of this unique destination includes both major industrial operations and nature theme parks. The local community that once served the military scene now works to preserve the bay and its lush interior. Several eco-tourism parks are located right in the heart of Subic Bay, including Ocean Adventure, Jungle Joe's World and Zoobic Safari. Subic Bay City Centre hotels are within walking distance of these popular tourist attractions as well as the downtown core of restaurants, bars and duty-free shopping complexes.
