Introduction to Samar Island, Philippines
Located in the Philippines region of Eastern Visayas, Samar Island is the country's third-biggest island. Offering the chance to enjoy everything from historical and cultural sites to outdoors pursuits that include hiking, swimming, diving and surfing, this is a popular holiday destination. The island is home to a long list of fantastic waterfalls, many of which are easily visited from hotels in Samar Island. Veriato, in the north of the island, is home to a stunning seaside village that is close to the impressive Bangon Falls. Biri Island, which sits a few miles offshore to the north, is a famously beautiful tourist destination, not least because of the surreal Magasang rock formation. At the other end of the island, Homonhon Island was Portuguese explorer Magellan's first stop in the Philippines. Also at the island's southern end, more incredible rock formations can be seen at Marabut. Samar is made more accessible by the fact that many popular attractions are located close to the sea, and the coastal road sews it all together nicely. Flights to Manila are available from the airports at Calbayog and Catarman but the airport at Tacloban City, on neighbouring Leyte Island, is easy to reach and busier.
