Introduction to Manila - Quezon City
The administrative centre of the Philippines, Manila's Quezon City, has more besides political and civil buildings. Found in the northeast of Manila, this area is popular with tourists who want to see some nature in the middle of a great metropolis. The Quezon Memorial City, built to honour the country's second president, is one of the few parks in Manila, and has places to sit, eat and people-watch. Nearby is Ninoy Aquino, a zoo where it is possible to boat on the lake here. The area also has some fine Christian buildings to witness. The most famous is the San Pedro Bautista, which is a very old cathedral that has the bones of the patron saint of the Philippines held in the building's catacomb. At night, students from two of the Philippines' most respected universities head to Tomas Morato and Timog Avenue where there are plenty of bars and restaurants to enjoy well into the early hours.
