Introduction to Manila - Intramuros
Manila's Intramuros, also known as the walled city, is a district of the capital city of the Philippines. Considered to be the oldest district, it was fortified by the Spanish during their colonial rule. The city is packed with history and attractions, some of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites. One of these sites is the San Agustin Church, built in the Baroque style in the 16th century. The Fort Santiago is the former headquarters of the Spanish and one of the most popular tourist attractions. It is fun to explore this historic district on foot, but it is also fun to take a calesa, or a horse-drawn carriage. There are several gates in and out of this area, but the most impressive is the Fort Santiago gate. There are a number of museums worth visiting, the best being the National Museum. Several parks dot the district, the most popular being Rizal Park. Intramuros is home to the Central Lagoon, the Chinese Garden and the Museum of the Filipino People, to boot. Most Intramuros hotels are located around Rizal Park, in the southern part of the district.Visit our Manila Travel Guide
