There has been a western style fort at Santiago since the late 16th century when the Spanish defeated Rajah Sulayman and built a stone fort to protect their gains. A hero of the Philippine revolution against the Spanish, Jose Rizal, was captured and executed at the fort in 1896 and became a folk hero for his fight against oppression. Prior to WWII Binondo was where most Chinese living in Manila did business and as a result much of the architecture of the area is heavily influenced by Chinese design and living. Bacolod Cathedral is a traditional style Spanish Church built from coral stone in 1885 and it replaces the original, prevous wooden church. The facade is now covered in a thin layer of cement for stability, but it still retains much of its original charm, especially the 3 equal size arches at the front, and the original bell towers, which were built from coral stone, and restored in concrete in 1969.
