Introduction to Davao, Philippines
Anyone visiting the stunning southern end of the Philippines will likely pass through Davao, the main urban hub on Mindanao. While certainly a large and bustling port city, it's a very livable place, with great beaches and mountain resorts nearby and a solid selection of traveller amenities. Davao may lack the colonial element found in other cities farther north, but it has a wealth of military battle sites and memorials from WWII. People's Park is an ideal place to beat the heat and perhaps even make a local friend or two, or duck into one of the city's many modern shopping malls like SM City or Victoria Plaza to see how residents spend their time and money. The beaches aren't particularly impressive but a short boat ride makes it easy to spend an afternoon on a palm-lined cove. Mt Apo, the highest peak in the Philippines, offers the nearest hiking and the scenery up here is superb.
