Introduction to Machu Picchu - Aguas Calientes
The Peruvian town of Aguas Calientes, now officially known as Machu Picchu Pueblo, is the gateway to the world-famous wonder of the ancient ruins of the Inca city, and receives literally millions of visitors every year. It lies deep in a valley overlooked by soaring Andean mountains. Set amid spectacular scenery, it's a scruffy town fighting to keep ahead of the needs of mass tourism, with the ruthless development of Aguas Calientes hotels an ongoing reality. Most accommodations are hostel-style, with a few more upscale offerings, but the draw of the famous ruins is such that no-one seems to mind the general lack of facilites. The town square is attractive, with tall, multicoloured terraced buildings, and there's plenty of choice of eateries and bars. The 'Lost City of the Incas' is a magnificent experience, a UNESCO-listed Site only discovered in 1911. The Temple of the Sun, with its amazing stonework, represents the pinnacle of Inca technology, and the so-called Temple of the Condor is believed to have been a torture chamber.
