Introduction to Juliaca, Peru

The Peruvian town of Juliaca is located close to the picturesque Lake Titicaca, although most tourists visiting the lake base themselves in nearby Puno, but the town is a far more pleasant base to stay and also situated very close to the lake. There are many simple hotels in Juliaca to choose from and it is a great base for exploring the nearby Peruvian villages. There is a great Sunday market within walking distance of many of accommodations that sell wonderful hand knitted Andean clothes and alpaca goods. The town centre where most of lodgings are based is filled with interesting historic buildings particularly around the central Plaza Bolognesi. Here you will also find some of the most beautiful churches such as the Iglesia Santa Cantelina. At night, this area is alive with many local bars where you can experience traditional folkloric music and Peruvian pipes.
