Introduction to Palau
Palau is one of the youngest and newest nations in the world. An American trustee state until 1994 this beautiful South Pacific Ocean island group lies about 800kms east of the Philippines and very far south of Japan. It is also spelled Belau and in some cases as Pelew. Palau hotels do a roaring trade with increasing amounts of visitors arriving here to experience the excellent diving and snorkelling opportunities. The pristine marine and underwater environment is one of the major draw cards here and eco tourism is a boom industry. Many hotels in Palau have been specifically designed with green care in mind and sustainability is key to most of the buildings and businesses here. Some Palau hotels are built in the famous Polynesian style with bunglaows sitting above the water itself, connected to each other and to the mainland by wooden slat walkways and bridges. These accommodations are naturally often booked up well in advance.
