Many Westerners may choose to avoid Oman during festivals like Ramadan when activity noticeably winds down, shops are closed for longer, and alcohol is even more strictly supplied. As with most trips abroad, it completely depends on what exactly any one traveller may be looking for.
July Festivals
Renaissance Day: in celebration of the day Sultan Qaboos ascended to the throne in 1970, this holiday is marked with traditional dancing, feasts and fireworks in many parts of the country.
No Fixed Date
Islamic New Year: marks the beginning of the first month on the lunar Muslim calendar, Muharram. The festival sees the exchanging of gifts and lots of eating and other festivities.
Ramadan: usually takes place in September depending on the lunar calendar, Ramadan is a period of fasting when the country slows down and small businesses close.
Eid Al Adha: occurring about 70 days after the end of Ramadan, the date of this three-day festival changes according to the lunar calendar. It is marked by prayers at the local mosque and a feast on Eid Al Adha day.
