Introduction to Sur, Oman
On the ancient trade route between East Africa, India and Oman, the seafaring city of Sur was once a major port. It remains a highlight of Omani cultural history today. For centuries, this Portuguese settlement was famous for building massive wooden ships, which are still being built at Ras Al Hadd bay. The history of these beautiful dhows is on display at Sur Maritime Museum. Visit the beach at dawn to enjoy the magnificent hues of the rising sun against the multi-coloured coast and watch men fishing alongside seagulls for their morning meal. At night, the waterfront Corniche is lit by stars shining over the Arabian Sea. From Sur hotels, travellers can visit the old watch towers beside the water channel, where there is a lovely view of boats entering and leaving the port. Go to the secluded beach at Ras Al Jinz to relax at the most eastern point of Arabia; after dusk, see turtles nesting on the banks.
