Muscat is a city that is particularly well endowed when it comes to tourist sites. Like the rest of the country, the capital is famous for its forts and souqs, or traditional markets – in fact, the city is widely considered to offer the best traditional Arabic shopping experience in the whole of the Gulf region. Al Jalali Fort and Al Mirani Fort constructed more than 425 years ago during the Portuguese occupation of Oman, these two historic buildings were originally conceived as prisons. Today they are more of a tourist trap in the hills overlooking the city and both feature museums outlining their turbulent pasts.
