Introduction to Al Ashkhara, Oman
Oman's Al Ashkhara (Al Ashkharah) gets its name from a poisonous desert plant, but the town is full of friendly Bedouin charm. A major city in the Sharqiyah Region, along with J'alan, Al Ashkhara has become a popular destination for tourists looking for adventure on the Indian Ocean. Surfers from around the world have been drawn to the swells here, in waters so warm that no wetsuit is necessary. Al Ashkhara hotels line the coast and its sheltered bays, surrounded by soft sandy beaches. Take a hike and watch the sun set over the ocean from the rocky hills above the coastline or explore the reef that extends far into the sea. Just down the road is the prime Al Jafn surfing spot know as Shipwreck Beach as well as remnants of old dhows that have run aground. The headlands of Ra's al-Ghaima and Ra's al-Hadd, between which lay a major nesting ground for green turtles, are only a short distance north along the coast.
