Trekking and walking: the rugged scenery lends itself to trekking and walking and there are many good paths and routes around the area. Mount Ulriken is only a few hours by car and has the popular four-hour route to Mount Floyen. The mountaintop hamlet of Myrdal is worth exploring and you can also board a cog railway for a stomach-churning ride to the beautiful village of Flam, an ascent of over 2,500 feet.
Boat trip: Bergen is also close to several fjords including the Sognefjord, Norway's longest fjord at 200kms and deepest at 1,300m and the Hardangerfjord, where you can stop at resorts such as Ulvik or Lofthus. There are several operators providing boat trips and they can be booked in the city centre. Also worth visiting are the spectacular waterfalls at Geirangerfjord, the huge Jostedalsbreen Glacier, and Trollveggen mountain; a testing challenge for climbers who visit the area.
