Introduction to Vadso, Norway
Unlike many of Norway's more famous tourist destinations, the town of Vadso sits in the northernmost reaches of Norway. It lies amid relatively flat countryside made up of gently undulating hills, which surround its position on the northern shores of the mouth of Varangerfjord and by the Barents Sea. The town looks across the fjord to the dramatically pockmarked landscape of the town of Kirkenes. The town has long been popular for its safe harbour, which is today home to fishing fleets and many Norwegian navy vessels. The town is popular with anglers thanks to being home to a pair of rivers offering excellent fishing for sea trout, salmon and char. Fishing and water sports can also be enjoyed at the nearby Navarsvannet and Langsmedvannet lakes. The town's church, located downtown and close to hotels in Vadso, has a funky design. Unlike some other regional communities, many of the town's 19th-century wooden houses survived WWII and can still be seen today. The island of Vadsoya, which sits a few hundred metres out in the Barents Sea, is home to the airship mast Roald Amundsen and Umberto Nobile used for their 1926 airship expedition to the North Pole.other spellings: wadso hotels, vedso otel, vadsso hotell, vadso hote, vadso hotelin, vadso hotes
