Introduction to Tonsberg, Norway
Home to some 35,000 people, the town of Tonsberg, located in Vestfold County in the southwest of the country, is Norway's oldest town. The town and the surrounding area are rich in history, some of it going back a considerable length of time. The most prominent local attraction is Castle Rock. Located in the centre of the town, the hill is topped by Castle Rock Tower, a 17m-high observation tower that dates from 1888, as well as the ruins of an older tower. About 200m south of the hill is Tonsberg Cathedral. Though the cathedral dates from 1858, it sits on the site of an older church and contains many important older elements of construction. This is a fairly large town, so some attractions are too far to reach on foot from hotels in Tonsberg. About five kilometres to the north, visitors find the Royal Mound, the burial place of the Viking Queen Alvhild. Archaeological excavations here discovered an old Viking ship. Historic exhibits, including Viking ships, can be enjoyed at the Vesfold County Museum, which is immediately to the east of Castle Rock.other spellings: tonberg otel, tonsburg hotell, tonberg hote, tonsberghotels, thonsberg hotle
