Introduction to Sogndal, Norway
The town of Sogndal is located at the heart of an important nature and tourism region covered by the many fingers of the Sognefjord. The biggest fjord in Norway and Europe's second-largest, the fjord attracts huge numbers of tourists. Hotels in Sogndal provide outstanding access to many of the biggest attractions in the area. The parish church, one of the oldest churches in the region, is just across the Sogndalselvi River, in Stedje. An ancient rune stone can be seen nearby. The nearby village of Kaupanger, about 15 minutes' drive to the east, is home to one of the better-known of the many wooden medieval stave churches. The Heiberg Collections, a traditional farm and open-air museum of traditional local life, is also found here. The biggest attraction in the area, the Naeroyfjord arm of the fjord, is located to the south, across the fjord. A boat cruise through here offers some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet. The town is conveniently located on Highway 55, one of the most popular tourist routes in the region.
