Introduction to Skjolden, Norway
The Norwegian community of Skjolden sits on a peninsula where two rivers empty into the easternmost end of the Sogneford. This is rugged, beautiful countryside. The Sogneford is the biggest of Norway's many fjords, and the area offers everything from cruises through the many awe-inspiring fingers of the fjord, to incredible hiking, mountaineering, road tours and relaxing walks in unspoilt wilderness. Hotels in Skjolden cater to a wide range of tourists, from backpackers travelling overland to passengers from the many cruise liners that tour the fjords. The town nestles at the base of some low mountains that provide a verdant backdrop to the picturesque collection of little houses. The area is also famous for the many little stave wooden churches dating from the Middle Ages. The closest of these churches is at Urnes, 30kms to the south. Feigumfossen Waterfall, which drops a spectacular 218m down a sheer cliff, is found at Luster, on the southern side of the fjord, some 16kms south of Skjolden. It can also be seen from Highway 55, on the other side of the fjord. Jostedalsbreen Glacier National Park is about 30kms to the northwest.other spellings: skjolden otel, skjoldan hotell, skjolden hote, skjoldenhotels, skjolden hotle, skjoden
