Introduction to Skien, Norway
When combined with the neighbouring community of Porsgrunn, the city of Skien is considered Norway's seventh-most populated city. One of the stateliest Skien hotels is the oldest in Telemark, the county for which the city is the administrative centre. One of this city's most famous former residents is renowned writer Henrik Ibsen, and the farm where he spent much of his childhood was converted into a museum bearing his name in 1958. Another museum and several historic buildings can be found at a park called Brekkeparken. Although the children's amusement park of Lekeland has been closed since 1958, the massive Skien Fritidspark contains an indoor water park alongside several other world class sporting facilities. The biggest outdoor climbing park in all of Norway, Himalaya Park, is also located here. No visit to Skien would be complete without taking a scenic cruise along the 105km Telemark Canal, Norway's only canal network linked to the Atlantic Ocean.
