The scenic community of Sandnessjoen lies on the coast of an island called Alsten, which is one of the largest of the more than 910 smaller islands belonging to the municipality of Alstahaug.

This port has been a popular Hurtiguten stop since 1891, and many guests decide on long stays here in Sandnessjoen hotels.

The local coat of arms was inspired by the Seven Sisters mountain range which surrounds this central Norwegian community.

The tallest of these famous mountains rises over a kilometre above sea level, while the deepest fjord in the area, Botnfjorden, has a maximum depth of 340m.

The local church, whose nickname translates to 'bride of Helgeland' in English, was constructed from wood and has stood in the city centre since 1882.

Two WWII burial grounds can also be found here.

Over 7,500 Russian prisoners of war are buried in the Russian War Cemetery, while the Tjotta International War Cemetery is dedicated to those who drowned when the Rigel transport ship was sunk.

The Helgeland Bridge has linked Sandnessjoen to mainland Norway since 1991.
