Introduction to Sandnes, Norway
Few Norwegian cities are growing at more rapid rates than Sandnes, situated on the coast of the nation's southwesternmost county, Rogaland, in a district traditionally called Jaeren. The city received its name from a combination of the Norwegian words for 'sandy beach' and 'headland', an appropriate name for this coastal community in one of Norway's flattest areas. This city may be just 15kms south of much larger Stavanger, where approximately 30 per cent of its population works, but Sandnes is Norway's eighth-biggest city in its own right, and guests at Sandnes hotels can easily reach Stavanger. This city was once known as Norway's pottery town and remains known as the country's bicycle city. Not only does the city contain an intricate cycling path network for both locals and visitors, a public bicycle rental system has been available here since 1996. Shopping is another main attraction here, and Kvadrat shopping centre is among the biggest not only in Norway, but in all of Europe.
