Introduction to Ringebu, Norway
The municipality of Ringebu is located in the middle of southern Norway in a county officially called Oppland and a region traditionally known as Gudbrandsdal. The most historic and unique landmark in this community situated halfway between Trondheim and Oslo is its impressive stave church. This church is one of Norway's oldest stave churches as well as one of less than 30 which have managed to survive in the country. Although the church is estimated to have first been constructed in the year 1220, its age could be even older and post holes from a previous church in the same location have been excavated. The former vicar's residence now contains an art gallery whose exhibits rotate during summer. Ringebu hotels are close to the popular Kvitfjell ski area where the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics downhill skiing races were held. Equally popular summer activities include golfing on the 18-hole Kvitfjell golf course and fishing, cycling, hiking and riding horses near the Venabygdsfjellet mountain area.
