Introduction to Otta, Norway
The Gudbrandsdalslagen River meets the Otta River in a Norwegian town also named Otta. This town is situated in a county called Oppland as part of a bigger municipality known as Sel, and Otta hotels are also located next to the large Rondane National Park, the oldest such park in Norway. Many surrounding place names were taken from the Battle of Kringen, which took place here in 1612 between Scottish mercenary troops and a militia of Norwegian peasants. This town also includes one of Norway's oldest wood mills, a bakery and two shopping centres. Rondane National Park, first opened in 1962 and extended in 2003, remains this region's most popular attraction. There are no fewer than 10 mountain peaks taller than 2,000m in the park, and the highest of them all is the 2,197m Rondslottet, whose name means 'Rondane Castle' in English. It takes under one day to walk to any of these peaks from Rondvatnet lake in the middle of the park, which is among the few places where wild reindeer roam freely in Europe.
